Pattariyar is acommunity found in south india.they are one of the principal weaving castes of south india.the litiles of the community are Pillai,Mudaliar or setti etc..
Etymolagy:-Pattariyar refers to the subcaste of the Aryas who practiced in producing silk handloom's.the community is noted as being Tamil migrants with thier name being a corruption of Pattusaliyar.
Legends:-According to mytolagy.the community migrated to its present habitate from Kanchipuram in Tamilnadu.the migration is recalled in oral tradition.it is learnt that their migration was due to the quarrel with the king of Kanchipuram.
long ago they also claim to have come from north india as silk weaver's.
Distribution:-Tamilnaadu- The presant abodes of Kalakad Pattariyans are Veeravanellur,Pattamadal and Eranail.Koranad and the Kottar pattariyan's are Kottar.
Kerala-The Pattariyan's are distributed in Alappuzha,Kottayam,Ernakulam and Trissur.There are many pattariyan's familics in the Alappuzha, Punnapra,Cherthala,Aroor, and Vaikom taluke Kulashekharamangalam,Vaikkaprayaar and in Pallippuram panchayath of Cherthala taluk.The community have their own School(Named"Pattariya Samajam High School")
and a Temple Named "Kdavil Sree Mahalaksmi Temple)
Ernakulam:-Kochi city,Padivattom(Edappally),Kanjiramattam,
Arayankavu,Njaraykkal,Plluruthy(Edakochi)
Perumpally,Pnangadu,Chengamanaadu,Edayaar,Kumbalam,
Paravur,Chendamangalam,Thrippunithura.
Thrisur:-Arippalam,Urakam,Erinjalakkuda,Kodungallur,Valappadu.
Costeme:-in Travancore,no Pattariya will reside in the midst Saliyan's nor will a Saliya be allowed recidance in a Pattariya street they claim to be Vaisya's.who were once known as Vadagangamyars,which is indicateve of the fact that their orginal home was on the southern bank of the ganges.
Adaviyar of Pattariya Settis:-The Avadiyar or Pattariya settis are Tamiliyans.probably an off shoot of the Kaikolans and have no connection with the Telugu Patusaalis,who,like the Padma Salis,retain their mother tongue wher ever they settle.
it was recorded in conection with the Saliyar of the Chingalpettu disrict.many of whom are Kaikolans,that"story in corrant of their persecution by one SaivaNaik(said to have been a Brahman)the result of thise was that large bodies of them were forced to flee from Conjeevaram to Madura.
Tanjore and Tinnevelly wre their represantetives are still to be found".
